Dia De Los Muertos: Guatemalan Kites: Barilletes Gigantes Hands-On Workshop
In Guatemalan communities on Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead), giant kites known as Barilletes Gigantes are flown over cemeteries to honor and communicate with deceased loved ones. Large festivals take place in Santiago and Sumpango in the Sacatepequez region of Guatemala and brings together entire communities. The festivals are rich in tradition and symbols rooted in ancient Maya culture. Barilletes are constructed using bamboo, fabric, and paper, and feature colorful religious or folkloric designs that can take months to complete.
Join us at the Idaho State Museum for a hands-on workshop to create your own Barillete under the instruction of Hiram Miranda, a local artist and educator.
This event is free with a suggested donation of $3-$5. All ages are welcome. Supplies are provided by museum staff.
