Dia de los Muertos Altar: Ofrenda Hands-On Workshop

October 22, 2023 @ 1:00 pm 2:30 pm MDT

Día de los Muertos (The Day of the Dead) is a holiday with roots dating back to Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica. Many Latin American cultures continue to embrace rich traditions and symbolism on Día de los Muertos with modern celebrations and solemn reflections alike. Ofrendas (Altars) are a focal point for many families to remember and show affection for their departed loved ones. The personalities of deceased individuals blend with longstanding traditions, and items such as cempasúchil (marigolds), velas (candles), calaveras (skulls), favorite foods, and personal effects of the dead are included in altars. Ofrenda construction brings people together to remember the joy, humor, and impact their loved ones brought to the world.

Join us at the Idaho State Museum for an interactive altar-building workshop led by Fonda Portales, art historian and
University Art Curator and Collections Manager at Boise State University.

This event is free with a suggested donation of $3-$5. All ages are welcome. Participants are encouraged to bring a small item that represents a deceased loved one to include on the workshop altar.
